NLV: people also ask

Can I work remotely on the NLV?

Officially, no. The Spanish government's position is that the NLV does not permit any economic activity, including remote work for foreign employers. In practice enforcement varies, but the Digital Nomad Visa is the correct route for remote workers.

How much income do I actually need?

For 2025, the rate is 400% of IPREM (~€2,400/month), plus 100% of IPREM per dependent (~€600/month). Most consulates also accept a lump-sum equivalent for the year.

Does my US Social Security count?

Yes — pension and social-security income are accepted as 'passive income' for the NLV.

Do I have to stay 183 days?

If you want to renew, yes. Spending less than 183 days/year in Spain means you don't become tax resident — but you also risk losing the NLV at renewal.

How long until I can apply for Spanish citizenship?

Generally 10 years of legal residency. Latin Americans, Filipinos, Andorrans, Portuguese, Equatoguineans, and Sephardic Jews qualify after just 2 years.

What's the renewal pattern?

1 year initial → renewable for 2 years → renewable for 2 more years → permanent residency after 5 years of legal residence.
