Spain: people also ask

Is Spain's Golden Visa still available in 2026?

No. Organic Law 1/2025 abolished Spain's Golden Visa effective 3 April 2025. Applications submitted before that date are still processed and existing holders keep their rights. New investors now look at the Non-Lucrative or Digital Nomad Visa.

What's the cheapest long-stay visa for Spain?

The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) has the lowest financial bar — roughly €2,400/month in passive income for a single applicant — but it does not allow you to work in Spain.

Can I work remotely from Spain on a tourist stay?

Only up to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen window. Beyond that you need a long-stay visa — the Digital Nomad Visa is built for remote workers with foreign employers or clients.

How long until I can apply for Spanish citizenship?

Generally 10 years of legal residency, reduced to 2 years for nationals of Latin American countries, Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, and Sephardic Jews.

Do I need a Spanish bank account before applying?

Not for the visa application itself, but you'll need one once you arrive to pay rent, taxes, and receive your residence card. Several banks open accounts remotely with just a passport.

What is the NIE and when do I need it?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your Spanish foreigner ID number. You'll need it for almost everything — bank account, rental contract, utilities. Apply at the Spanish consulate during your visa process or at a police station once you land.
